Events that took place during 2009

School boys George and Sami took part in the British 10K Challenge

George Cotterell and Sami Mason are both aged fifteen and are the sons of CVI Trustees Harry and Reshma.  They took part in the

British 10K London Run on 12 July 2009 in aid of the CVI.  It was ten years ago that both boys experienced the sad loss of a parent (George his mother and Sami his father) to melanoma.  George is no stranger to fundraising – nearly three years ago he helped to raise nearly £60,000 walking 150 miles from Hereford to London in just six days.  Both boys are hoping that you might like to sponsor their efforts.  You can do this either by sending a cheque made payable to the CVI or by donating securely on-line (please make sure you add that it is for the boys in the how did you hear about us section). We had a wonderful team of 6 who ran for the CVI and between them they raised over £24,000 so we we would like to say a huge thank you to Lucy, James, Sami, George, Brendan and Wai for their support and everybody who sponsored them.

The Mongol Rally - 18th July 2009

Richard Cotterell (son of the CVI's Chairman Harry and older brother to George above) and Arthur Clowes, both aged eighteen, took part in the Mongol Rally in the summer of 2009.  It was ten years ago that Richard experienced the sad loss of his mother to malignant melanoma.  The Mongol Rally is a 10,000 mile car journey facing some of the world’s toughest and remotest terrains with no support back up.  It starts from the motoring mecca Goodwood on 18th July and finishes in Ulaanbaatar the Capital of Mongolia three to five weeks later.  The journey is not for the faint hearted particularly as the car will be entirely unsuitable for the challenge (it is limited to 1.2 litres or less).  The boys will cover all of the costs themselves including the £1,000 that needs to be raised for the event’s official charities and anything raised above and beyond this will go to

London to Paris Bike Ride - 3-6 September 2010

We are once again offering places for this annual and very popular event.

This long-weekend challenge links two great European cities, London and Paris and covers around 300km in just three days. Encounter historic towns, sleepy villages, rolling countryside and challenging hills en-route. Cycle along wide Parisian boulevards to the finishing line at the city’s most famous landmark, the Eiffel Tower.  There is also free time to recover or celebrate and explore the sights of Paris before boarding the Eurostar train back to London.  All we ask is that you raise a minimum of £1000 to cover your costs and a donation to the CVI.  If you’d like to join our team for 2010 please get in touch for an information/registration pack.

The 2007 CVI Team

Amanda Linter, Michael Andrews, Paul and Matthew Hughes and Douglas Reid all from Schenker Limited took part and raised over £6000.  Amanda describes their experience.

London ...... starting out in the rain.........               Paris ...... finishing in the sun ..........

"We did it!  We cycled 182 miles from Crystal Palace to the Eiffel Tower!  300kms or 182 miles over 3 days.

We left Crystal Palace at 7am on Friday 29th June in the pouring rain!  Wet, cold and wondering what we were doing we finally made Newhaven at 5pm and caught the ferry to Dieppe.  Day Two we left Dieppe and enjoyed the 'rolling hills' as we headed for our overnight stop at Gournay en Bray.  Day Three was extremely challenging - we never realised Paris was at 7000ft above sea level!  Extreme hills and tired legs but the adrenalin was flowing, the sun had finally decided to come out and we were running on pride as we completed our challenge!  Finally arriving at the Eiffel Tower under an arch of balloons and popping champagne corks we were jubilant!  It was an incredible experience and certainly a challenge.  But that is what we signed up for.  Let's not forget why we did this:- we all had a personal goal to get fit this year, give up all our bad habits and to get ourselves out from behind our desks.  This we certainly achieved!  We also wanted to do something in support of a cause that we each appreciated.  Like us I am sure many of you will have been touched by cancer in some way and at some point in your life.  It affects us all and we wanted to do our bit to help.  This we have also achieved and thanks to all of you who have supported us and donated."

the Cancer Vaccine Institute.
